Mellencamp's publicist responds

C.J./Star Tribune got a hold of John Mellencamp's publicist, Bob Merlis, to address the singer's remarks on how Kevin McHale and Larry Bird "would come to my dressing room after the show and smoke me under the table."

"There was no room to qualify things. There's no follow-up question because the reader isn't there. It's an e-mail that came in," Merlis told me. "I'm telling you I've spent a lot of time with this guy. He's the least likely guy to smoke pot I've ever known. He's very abstemious. I really believe the smoking related to cigarettes, but you know when I was in high school if you smoked cigarettes that was breaking training."
